How Water Damage Made Me More Aware

Throughout my life, I have heard the occasional tales of tragedy in relation to water damage. It seems that this topic is always the most dramatic among home owners and I have heard enough stories to last me a lifetime. I have been a home owner for a few years now and after spending many years being cynical of the way victims of water damage have described their experiences with such high levels of drama, I can honestly say now that I finally get it. I have fallen victim to water damage in my home just recently, and it served as a learning experience in what I need to be more aware of when protecting my home from being destroyed by water.

I have learned that water damage is a serious threat that in no way should ever be taken lightly. Dealing with the headaches that were involved with all of the cleanup and repair work that came afterwards taught me some very valuable information that I have learned the hard way. Apparently, when people are describing how overwhelming the damage is to their home and it’s contents after a disaster related with water, they are usually not being dramatic enough in my new opinion. I had some pipes burst while away from my home for a good part of the day and upon returning, I discovered one of the biggest messes I have ever seen in my life. I was amazed to see how much water was absorbed into basic building materials such as the carpet and walls. All of the items on the floor were soaked in water and some items literally had to be thrown out from being ruined. It is not something that you think will ever happen to you, but when you experience water damage first hand in your own home, you will be shocked to see just how traumatic the path of destruction can be.

I can honestly say that after that experience was finally over, I take the threat of water damage much more seriously and I am more aware of what preventative measures to take. I would like to share some of this knowledge with you in hopes that it well help you avoid experiencing water damage in your own home, or at least help keep the damage to a minimum. The first tip that I will share with you is something that I did during the restoration process. Once the water saturated carpet and carpet padding was pulled up, I replaced it with ceramic tile. This did not cost much more than what I would have been charged for to put down new carpet, especially since the damage occurred in the bathroom and that is a relatively small space for the average home owner to have to floor anyway. The reason I selected this material is because natural stone tiles can withstand the effects that standing water can have for a much longer period of time than any other type of floor covering. Another material that I changed over to during the restoration process is a more appropriate type of wall board known for having a moisture barrier already in place. This provides an additional bonus in the way of protection because mold is known for developing easily in bathrooms from time to time and this type of wall board will fight that off much better than standard wall board.

I saved the best tip for last, and that is to consider your level of vulnerability to falling victim to water damage in your home and responding to it properly. Inspect your home’s plumbing routinely to ensure that there are no leaks present that you may be unaware of. Keep on eye on the condition of your roof from time to time to be sure that there is not a disaster waiting to happen that will involve water coming into your home from up above. Be sure that rooms that contain running water such as bathrooms and the kitchen are outfitted with building materials that can resist the effects of water if they had to for a period of time. By doing these things and simply being more aware, you will increase the chances of never having a terrible story to tell others that involves water damage in your home.
